![]() Having this road as a through route causes congestion along its entire length and particularly at the junctions of the ring road. The route I described through the centre of Southampton shouldn't be a through route, but it is, and it is used as an alternative to the ring road. Has anybody else had bad experiences of the traffic lights in Southampton? The traffic lights are also often three or four way now, which makes the problem worse. And lo and behold there are no cars wishing to exit the side turning. It is also annoying when you approach a green set of lights at after midnight, and as soon as you pass over the road sensor they change to red. Once those two cars have passed the lights they often remain green for at least another ten seconds or so. All of the time long traffic queues build up on the main arteries in the city, all in order to let perhaps two cars out of a side turning. However, in Southampton road sensors don't appear to get used. The purpose of this apparatus is to only activate the green phase on a certain route when there is traffic queuing, and to terminate the phase as soon as the traffic has passed. Yes, the traffic lights in Southampton have infrared beams and road sensors. ![]() On their website they quote that the contol rooms "utilise the latest hi-tech systems". Southampton's ROMANSE (ROad MANagement System for Europe) centre is in control of the traffic lights in Southampton.
